Asupercell is a widespread, long-lived,rotating windstorm that is associated with severe thunderstorms. Supercells can cause straight-line winds, tornadoes,hail, heavy rains, and flash floods. This single-celled storm has only one dominant updraft of moist, feeding air and one dominant downdraft of cooled air, rain, and possibly hail.
On radar, discrete supercells sometimes (not always) have a very distinctive appearance (displaying a hook echo). Supercells can be visually stunning (see photograph below), and when it comes to producing dangerous, destructive weather, supercells are a big deal!

This rotation is derived from shear in the environmental wind field (that is, a change in wind direction and / or speed with height) surrounding the storm as it begins to grow. Weather radars provide constant monitoring of supercells, but techniques from the past few decades have been unsuccessful in finding differences between supercells that produce tornadoes and ones that do not.
